“Congratulations,” Donald said, then noticed her expression. “Something wrong, Miray?”

“I thought pushing Chi that hard would get me put down for the second or third batch. Being first is more risk than I was planning on, and it will bring a lot more other problems than I’m looking for.”

A sinking feeling hit his stomach. “I understand that there are unknowns. You knew that when you applied, and applied, anyway. What are the specific problems you’re talking about?”

“Damn it,” she said, raising her voice. “You’re so damn naïve sometimes. I am a criminal that fled earth and got here because of family connection. I am a slut and a porn star. If I am in the first batch, and have even a chance at delivering the first child on Mars, all that will be plastered everywhere. A lot of people hate me already and I am unwelcome many places here. People on Earth and people here are already trying to take away everything I’ve built on Mars. Being in that first batch makes me a target they will not pass up striking at!”
