The room Jimmy entered was typical of a work room converted to a storage room. The haphazard way things were piled on the work-desk gave testament to the rare use of this stuff. He saw laptops ten years out of date, and the opened desktops with the pulled hard drives were likely older still.
There was nothing of interest here.
It was a total letdown.
The test must be just going through that wall then moving around, not anything to do with what was in here. He walked around the edge of it, walking right through the desk, shelves, and even equipment. Once he was sure he had returned to his spot, he walked back through the wall.
Blackness.
Having made the trip once, he walked the needed three steps to clear that wall.
Griever and Eastland’s grinning faces greeted his return. Griever held up a card.
Are you OK?
Jimmy hit the green light.
He raised another card.
Return to Chamber.
Sweet. Moving on that slick surface hadn’t been easy, but for that kind of pay, well worth it. With no hesitation, he walked through the vault-like chamber door and stood on that spot.
The floor became non-slick once more.
His speaker squeaked, “Congratulations, Mr. Roeing. You just made yourself a nice bonus. We are downloading your helmet camera now. If we like what we see, I may have an even bigger bonus you can earn.”
Jimmy grinned. They already owed him seventy-five grand. “How much? And when and for what?”
“In due time. Come on out of there and take off your helmet. It won’t take Dr. Eastland and I long to review those files and see what you did.”
The chamber door began opening.
Seventy-five thousand tax free wouldn’t get he and Linda that house they wanted. But one more bonus that size would get them a mortgage on it, with payment down to a level they could make.
He needed help getting the gloves off. Once they were off, he removed his helmet while Griever joined Eastland.
The two of them were not long there looking over Eastland’s laptop before Griever came back.
“You’ll do. Now the real reason we needed this done today, and your chance for an additional million more, and why there can be no record that this suit even exists.”
Jimmy inhaled sharply at that mention of a one million bonus.
“Roughly three quarters of a mile through solid rock, in the direction that line is painted on the floor, is Elmeron Dynamic’s high security lab’s fifth sub-basement. Three different projects are coming to an end and being shipped out, as well as other things being in progress. We want film of the entire floor. Like us, no one is in the basement today. Unlike us, it rarely happens over there. I was going to be the one doing this until I found out we had someone working here with experience in an artic suit. Eastland convinced me to hire an expert at expert wages.”
Jimmy was stunned. This was too big an opportunity to pass up.
“When you get back, you also need to help us destroy that suit and tear apart this chamber. No one can ever suspect we had a suit and chamber besides what is being researched right above us. Do you want the job?”
“Damn straight I do.” These were billion-dollar contracts these two companies competed for. The edge that that information could give a man like Griever would make it well worth him paying Jimmy a million. “But I want more. I want in on what you are doing with that information, too.”
“Fine, then let’s get the other cameras mounted on your suit so you can be off.”
