Renegade on Kara The Great Basin Chapter 3 Going on the Run
Going on the run from spell casting AIs, dragons and a nearly all powerful state isn't easy, even on a world with an infinite surface.
The joy of that first touch echoed through Roger the entire journey back to his room. It could not lighten the daunting, painful decision before him entering his room. He pulled everything from his backpack and placed that rather large egg in its bottom.
Now, which of his most prized possessions he must destroy?
With great pain, both the mage camera and album went. Then his remote puppet and controller. Not only was it a useful tool, but he had been improving it every year since creating it as a child. He began packing everything back in.
It wasn’t enough.
Once more, he pulled everything but the egg out. With a sigh, he destroyed his helmet and started packing everything back in.
He got it closed and attached the maguatar.
Then his battlecloak and mage sword magic conflicted with the backpack as he attempted to put it on.
Damn it. He hadn’t designed them to work together. He took them off and went to work making modifications to all three, physically and magically.
Two hours later, he put on the battlecloak, then the mage sword. He took a deep breath and lifted the backpack with the maguatar mounted to it.
No conflict.
He sighed, then addressed the AI. “Unlock the door. Do a full purge of all records I have been keeping on the University computers, run my scrubber program on the room computer.”
Unlike Lynn, being a scholar, he used a scholar’s records system. This meant everything he entered; the computer backed up on four different computers on First, four times a day. It wasn’t possible to wipe those records. Those records would fall into the hands of the investigators and their AIs and be used to determine his likely actions. Deleting them at the University would at best slow them down for a day.
He unmade his desk, bed, and the last few items there. The room became nothing more than a bare box with a window, computer screen, closet, and extending shower stall.
