While every creature here used the letters and writing that humans brought to this part of Kara a thousand years ago, none of these were that practiced at it, and it took three days before the Tomlins, Monderins, and Berm completed the letters. Roger put that time to good use enchanting, now that he had a much better idea of just what tools he needed to survive here. “I’m not having Joshua take them just yet,” he told Berm, taking the neatly bundled stack of letters the man held out to him in his trembling hands. “Hook my wagon up and take it to Catlin. Take out most of the goods and put them with yours, taking only what you will need to buy food, livestock and other badly needed goods to get this place up and running. Since the mules can pull it and that water wagon both, fill it up and attach it and sell that much water to cover as much of what you are buying as it will get. I’d like you fully stocked up on food before they find out the Confederation is coming.”

Grin stretching his face, Roger pulled his latest medallion from his pocket and held it out to the old man. “Wear that around your neck. While the protection from physical assault that will give you is limited, it will keep any G’Dan from messing with you magically. It will also let me know what they might be doing, and I can use it to strike back if needed with spells every bit as lethal as the one I used to take off the head of the one that came here.”

Alarm written across his face, Berm pulled back his outstretched hand. “Not sure kill’n more’s a good idea. Won’t be safe for me to stay if’n you kill more.”

Roger’s grin grew even larger. “If you’re wearing it, I likely won’t need to. There are damn impressive shields on this. Good Mages, even if they are G’Dan mages, should know it would be pointless to attack you. But even beyond that, probing those shields and they will see me looking back at them, ready to strike. They know I took out the Royal Guards at an even greater distance; they’re not going to start anything with you if they see that disk and its protections.”

With reluctance, Berm took the disk held out with its attached cord, and put it around his neck.
