“You hear that?” Steven said from his seat across from Don, puzzlement on his face.
Hearing only wind in the trees and the people going about their business, Don responded, “No, what?”
“Someone’s running an engine.”
With the generators currently off, and no power tools in use, there should not be any. Don listened again. Nothing.
Steven said, “It’s coming up the mountain.”
Don heard it for an instant, then it faded. “Would Doug have tried bringing the tractor up the trail?”
“No, he knows it can’t make it.”
Don heard it again, louder. “Someone’s coming. I doubt it is good. Make preparations for me to leave.”
“Yes, Baron,” Steven said, and stood.
That still bothered him, yet Doug had been right. Making even his inner circle use his title did get things done faster and with far fewer arguments. Nor was leaving tonight instead of tomorrow going to be such a big deal, though it would need to be in the next two hours to beat the night.
