Don shifted the Basilisk to the empty New York construction company yard on a brittle January day of ‘77 for Kevin’s crew, unguarded yards being the only ones his crew would rob. It surprised Don how many unguarded sites and yards there were in the winter of ’77, with everything he needed sitting out for the taking.
After Don opened the doors, clad in parkas from Don’s last set of raids, Kevin’s men piled out into the pristine, untracked snow.
First came six mini tankers full of fuel. All six started up, keys still in them, and lined up. Don shifted each to Asgard, one at a time. Next came twelve dozers so big, each barely fit inside. Ten mini-track loaders by Case not even on his list, similar to the Bobcats he already had, Keven’s crew grabbed during the last two trips he had time for. Four of those had skids of bricks on them when they drove them onto the Basilisk.
That last trip brought a smile to his lips. Keven’s run was the most effective equipment raid in the shortest time any baron had yet achieved. He shut down the Basilisk controls to take his first twenty-minute break.
Thick black exhaust from the mini-loaders being unloaded smacked him in the face as he opened the cockpit door. Coughing, he moved past them and out the side door.
Kevin, already seated at the table with Carlos and Steve, poured him a glass of champagne with a huge grin on his face. “I’ll deliver the tax to King Peter’s warehouse personally the moment you start your next set of raids, then get these big boys started on making that road.”
Don took the glass and said, “Damn good job, Squire Kevin. If that road comes as fast, our Barony will be doing great.” He held out his glass.
The three men lifted their glasses to his with an audible clink. Then, as one, they drank.
