With eight minutes still left on his clock, Bob triggered the shift back to Asgard, opened the outer doors and sat back in his chair, the tension leaving his shoulders.
Over the speakers came Captain Rice yelling, “All right, people, move out! I have transportation for you,” while Chuck yelled, “This way everyone. We have trucks to take you the rest of the way.” Both men stood in different doors, Rice at the side and Chuck at the cargo door.
Bob reset one of his screens, and sure enough, there were trucks sitting beside the Gorgon. Two of White Eddie’s German trucks, complete with Nazi emblems still on them.
A panic started.
“Move people!” yelled Rice.
While at the same time, Chuck yelled, “Let’s get moving people!”
And in her Yiddish, Rachel was screaming, “Those are stolen trucks! These are not the Nazis!”
Jimmy was there near Chuck and in a quieter and calmer voice said, “Please pick up your side arm before boarding a truck. Wild animals are sometimes a problem.”
“Pistolet?” one man who seemed to have caught the gist of that said to Rachel.
“Yes, you can have a pistol.” Then she switched to Yiddish and pointed to Jimmy. “Just follow him to get a gun.”
As if a switch had been thrown, everyone was picking up their kids and moving out the back door.
Rice stepped up and held out a steel collar to Rachel.
She gave him a dirty look but started stripping out of her clothing without argument.
Bob wondered again about his choice of Rice to head his security. He was going out of his way to humiliate Rachel for no good reason.
Sighing, Bob hit the button, opening the door and shutting down his consoles.
Rachel was just removing her underwear when he stepped out. Going to his locker, he got his gun while Rice locked the steel collar around her neck. Once armed, he turned to the girl. “You did a fine job. I’m glad you decided to return, though.”
“Not only had I given you my word that I would, I was terrified the whole time there that Captain Rice might convince you not to bother going back and I would be stuck there. I don’t like being a slave and a whore, but that is better than living in terror the way they do. I am glad we rescued what we could. I hope you will get a lot more out.”
“I am planning at least one more trip, as I told you. There is a possibility of one more after that, depending on other factors. But that would be all for that location.”
Her voice sounded hurt when she asked, “Why?”
